You are not alone with your personality disorder

Every person has individual traits and patterns of thinking and behaviour that make them who they are. However, when these patterns become so rigid, pronounced and inflexible that they repeatedly lead to conflict at work, in relationships and in the way a person relates to themselves, a personality disorder may be present. Those affected experience, feel and act in certain situations in ways that differ markedly from what their social environment expects – often causing considerable distress for themselves and the people around them. This frequently results in a burdensome cycle of interpersonal conflict, emotional instability and self-doubt that is very difficult to break alone. At our acute psychiatric clinic, we support you in understanding your patterns and finding new, sustainable ways towards a stable and self-determined life!

Common Personality Disorders

Personality disorders manifest in very different ways and are classified into various types according to the predominant pattern. What they all have in common is that the affected patterns of behaviour and experience deviate markedly from cultural expectations, show up across several areas of life, and typically begin in adolescence or early adulthood.

  • Emotionally unstable personality disorder (borderline type): Strong mood swings, impulsive behaviour, and an unstable self-image and unstable relationships
  • Anxious (avoidant) personality disorder: Pronounced insecurity, fear of rejection and strong social withdrawal
  • Dependent personality disorder: Excessive need to be cared for, along with submissive and clinging behaviour
  • Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder: Excessive orderliness, perfectionism and a strong need for control
  • Narcissistic personality disorder: An exaggerated need for admiration, a lack of empathy and a highly vulnerable sense of self-worth
  • Histrionic personality disorder: Excessive emotionality and a strong need to be the centre of attention
  • Paranoid personality disorder: Deep-seated mistrust and excessive sensitivity to perceived rejection

Symptoms of Personality Disorders

  • Marked fluctuations in mood, self-image and interpersonal relationships
  • Recurring conflicts in private and professional life
  • Impulsive or self-damaging behaviour
  • Difficulty allowing closeness or maintaining stable relationships
  • Excessive mistrust or intense fear of abandonment
  • Low self-esteem combined with high sensitivity to criticism
  • A sense of not being understood by one’s environment

Those affected often do not initially perceive their patterns of thinking and behaviour as problematic, instead attributing the resulting conflicts to their surroundings. This makes it harder to gain insight into the condition and often means that professional help is only sought after a long period of suffering.

Causes of Personality Disorders

Personality disorders develop from a complex interplay of different factors. Alongside a genetic predisposition, early relationship and attachment experiences play a central role. Difficult childhood experiences, neglect or trauma can make it harder to develop stable coping strategies and can contribute to the emergence of dysfunctional patterns. Social and societal influences are also discussed in research. Therapeutic approaches assume that the patterns involved have developed over years as an attempt to adapt to difficult life circumstances – and that, in the same way, they can be changed through a longer-term therapeutic process.
